Southern Cross Environmental Services

Challenge
Design and construction bid document preparation for a series of ponds and piping that includes one sludge pond and 8 evaporation ponds on 42.5 acres of lined area with HDPE to commercially dispose of and evaporate produced water from oil and gas projects throughout the region.

Solution
Weaver Boos Consultants, LLC (WBC) designed a facility to commercially dispose of produced water that will be trucked to the site for evaporation in a series of 8 ponds at 5 acres in size each.  The facility is designed to handle tanker trucks delivering the production or “brine” water on a 24 hours per day basis.

The site is located in a remote semi-arid region of southwestern Wyoming located approximately 46 miles north of the Baggs, WY.  The site is ideally situated for the produced water disposal facility given that there are no residences within 20 miles, the climate is semi-arid, and the nearest surface body of water is approximately 4 miles to the south.

The facility will be comprised of the following:

  • An access road.
  • Truck off-loading pad.
  • Truck off-loading stand-pipes.
  • 6 concrete acceptance pits.
  • A sludge pond lined with compacted clay and 60-mil thick HDPE geomembrane at 2.5 acres in size.
  • Conveyance piping and valves.
  • 8 – 5 acre evaporation ponds lined with compacted clay and 60-mil HDPE geomembrane at 40 acres in area.
  • Leak detection sumps and observation pipes.
  • Drainage controls.

Results
WBC completed the design and permit documents for submission to the State of Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Water Quality Division.  The permit is nearing approval and then the design will be offered to select contractors for bids.  WBC will perform the bid document distribution, answer bidder questions, and receive the bidders’ proposals.  A contractor will be recommended and the facility will be under construction in the near future.  WBC will provide the construction quality assurance (CQA) services to ensure that the facility is completed per the design.
